.hack (pronounced "Dot Hack") is a Japanese multimedia franchise that includes two projects: Project .hack and .hack Conglomerate. The franchise was created and developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is set in an alternative history where a major global computer network disaster occurred in 2005, leading to the rise of a new version of the internet. The series revolves around the fictional massively multiplayer online role-playing game The World. The franchise includes anime, video games, manga, novels, and other related media.
The first project, Project .hack, was launched in 2002, with the anime series .hack//Sign and the PlayStation 2 game .hack//Infection. The project has expanded with additional television series, video games, manga, and novels, all centered around the events of The World. The international release of the franchise began with the release of .hack//Infection in 2003 and an English dub of .hack//Sign.
.hack Conglomerate is the current project of .hack and involves CyberConnect2 and various other companies. It includes three PlayStation 2 games called .hack//G.U., an anime series called .hack//Roots, prose, and manga. .hack Conglomerate focuses on events and installments that take place after the original The World MMORPG.
Some characters from the franchise also appear in the Nintendo 3DS games Project X Zone and Project X Zone 2.
